How much of the source canon do you need to know to play here?You don't have to know that much; we don't replay the canon story. Each character who existed in canon has a
wikipedia link on the canon list, which links to a quick little overview paragraph; read that. That's all you have to read. I promise.
So what's the deal with this canon stuff?Perfect World skates a line: it's heavily inspired by volumes 1-13 of Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yuugi manga, but the source material is all background (past lives, prior relationships, reincarnation, extant spirits) -- because of this, it can be used or discarded as individual players and characters wish. Some characters have a stronger connection with their past lives than others; how much of the source you want to work into a canon character is entirely up to you. Do all characters have to be Asian?Absolutely not! Any character, even the canons (unless they are already defined -- and these are Miaka, Yui, Keisuke, Tetsuya, and Taka) can be from anywhere in the world.
What's the rating here?Tell a good, interesting story. We are self-hosted, and expect you to be able to handle the same mature themes that were presented in canon, so use whatever tools you like to do that.
How many characters can a player have?As many as you can keep active and tell interesting stories with. Seriously, I am so easygoing.
Is there room for original characters?Yes, and in fact GOD YES. The merging of the worlds and the reemergence of magic affects
everyone, not just the gods who are trying to keep the world from exploding and making rocks fall and everyone die. Japan is full of Shinto clergy who totally understand the kinds of magic refilling the world and know how to deal with the unhappy spirits; everyone remembers the old traditions, even if they didn't believe in them; there are always people who will grab a new kind of power and want to keep it for themselves. Don't relegate yourself to just the canons -- there are so many stories to tell here.
